When was ING formed?

ING Group was created in 1991 through the merger of the Dutch insurer Nationale-Nederlanden and the Dutch bank NMB Postbank Groep.

 
What does ING stand for?

ING Group is the official name of the company. It is not an abbreviation of a longer name. Originally, ING stood for Internationale Nederlanden Group. The name was used after the merger that created ING in 1991. Soon after, the abbreviation ING became so well-known that the name of the company was changed to ING.
 
When did ING begin to have a major presence in the U.S.?


ING's purchased a number of U.S.-based companies between 1977 and 1999. In 2000, it tripled its size in the U.S. with the purchase of ReliaStar Financial and Aetna Financial Services. Click here for more information.
 
Where is ING headquartered?

The ING U.S. administrative headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia, while its executive headquarters is located in New York City. ING Group headquarters is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
 
How has ING managed to reach such a high level of brand awareness in the U.S. in such a short amount of time?

In 2001, ING first began building its brand in the U.S. Our 'ING Bench' advertising became an iconic marketing campaign that was key to establishing the ING brand in the U.S. ING became known as the humorous, offbeat company that liberally used the color orange and clearly did things differently than competitors. In 2006, ING rolled out its 'Your future. Made easier.' brand message, marketing itself as a company that made it 'Easier' for customers to save, invest, protect and manage their money. What is the story behind the ING lion and the orange?

ING's orange lion goes way back to ING's Dutch roots. Orange is the national color of the Netherlands, and the lion the country's national symbol. Several founding ING companies, banks and insurers, had or still have the lion in their logos.
