| NMB Postbank Group
NMB Postbank Group was the result from the merger in 1989 by Postbank
and NMBBank. The merger brought benefits to both institutions. Postbank
suffered from limitations as a former government service; for instance,
it was prohibited from stockbrokerage activities. A merger with
another banking institution ended those limitations. NMB Bank saw
a merger with Postbank as an opportunity to expand in the retail
market and to jointly become the third-largest bank in the Netherlands.
The NMB Postbank Group had only two years as an independent financial
institution. In 1991, it merged with Nationale-Nederlanden to form
ING. The Postbank business units continued to operate under their
own name. NMB Bank changed its name to ING Bank.
