The German elections have resulted in a “bittersweet victory” for German chancellor Angela Merkel, according to ING’s Economics Department.

Her party may have been the clear winner in the elections, but its poor showing compared to previous elections and the surge of support for the right-wing AfD means she will govern with a more limited mandate than she has enjoyed until now. What will that mean for Germany’s governability, what will it mean for the largest economy in Europe and what will it mean for European integration?
