Royal Honours for Jan Hommen

Jan Hommen promoted to Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau

Jan Hommen, chairman of the Executive Board of ING Group, has been promoted to Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

The royal decoration was presented during the symposium ‘Sustainability of the Netherlands plc’ on Monday, 23 September, by the Dutch Finance Minister, Jeroen Dijsselbloem.

Jan Hommen received the royal honours for his exceptional contribution to the continuity of ING as an international enterprise as well as for his efforts to change the financial sector following the 2008 financial crisis.

Jan Hommen was appointed a member of the Supervisory Board of ING Group on 1 June 2005. In January 2008, he became chairman of the Supervisory Board. In January 2009, he took the helm in the midst of the financial crisis. On 27 April 2009, he was appointed chairman of the Executive Board. In recent years, he has strengthened the company’s financial position and presided over major restructuring and change processes at ING, from which ING has emerged as a stronger, simpler and customer-centric organisation.

On 1 October 2013, Jan Hommen will be succeeded by Ralph Hamers.

Symposium ‘Sustainability of the Netherlands plc’

A symposium was held in Amsterdam on 23 September to mark the departure of Jan Hommen as CEO of ING Group. The theme of the symposium was ‘Sustainability of the Netherlands plc’, focussing on the importance of a stable financial sector as catalyst for the economy.

This is a theme that Jan Hommen holds close to his heart. During his long career in global business, and above all also in the most critical phase of the financial crisis, he had at various times given his perspective on the future of the financial system.

During this symposium, various speakers talked about what had been achieved in recent years and what was needed to achieve the ambition of a catalysing and stable financial sector. Klaas Knot, president of DNB, the Dutch central bank, spoke about ‘Balans versterken of economie financieren?' (Balance sheet strengthening or financing the economy?) and Wiebe Draijer, chairman of the Social and Economic Council (a government advisory body), spoke about the ‘Economische uitdagingen voor Nederland’ (economic challenges for the Netherlands).
