The renovation and opening of the new Rijksmuseum will create more jobs and boost tourism while contributing €235 million in gross domestic product (GDP*) per annum.

Those are the main results of the study conducted by advisory firm Booz & Company.
The economic value and impact analysis shows the economic and social effects of the Rijksmuseum in the 2003 – 2017 period. Besides actual operations, the study also looked into the investments made in the museum in recent years and their long term effect.

Conclusions

Key conclusions of the report:

1. The new Rijksmuseum will contribute €3 billion in gross domestic product to the Dutch economy in the 2003 – 2017 period.
2. After its re-opening, the Rijksmuseum will contribute €235 million per annum.
3. One fourth of all visitors say that the Rijksmuseum is the only reason to come to Amsterdam; Rijksmuseum visitors are good for 5 to 10% of total tourist expenditure in Amsterdam.
4. Each visitor to the Rijksmuseum contributes about €110 to GDP.
5. The new Rijksmuseum is good for about 3,700 jobs in the Netherlands. That is an increase of about 1,100 since the period prior to the renovation.

*Gross domestic product is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country in a specific time period.

Engaged

ING has helped made this possible. “As principal sponsor, we want to make our own contribution to the celebration of the grand reopening”, explains Johan van der Zanden, director of Communications at ING. “ING wants to engage with the Netherlands, its inhabitants, businesses and institutions. Culture has traditionally been important to our customers and staff and this is why ING sponsors various art and cultural projects. ING wants to make these accessible to as many people as possible.”

Rijksmuseum gardens

The Rijksmuseum has opened its new gardens with an exhibition of sculptures by British artist Henry Moore. Twelve monumental sculptures by Moore are on display outdoors.

The Rijksmuseum's new 'outdoor gallery' is more than 14,500 m2. Copijn Garden and Landscape Architects based the new design on architect Pierre Cuypers' original plan for the gardens from 1901.
